From being Ireland’s best-kept secret, Foy Vance has grown into an internationally acclaimed artist. With a new album that ties together a 26-year personal journey, he returns to Sweden this autumn for a long-awaited concert.
For years, Vance was a songwriter operating on the fringes of the spotlight, yet with a reputation that spread from stage to stage. Today, his audience extends far beyond Ireland, partly thanks to collaborations with artists such as Elton John, Alicia Keys and his friend Ed Sheeran, who has also released Vance’s music on his label Gingerbread Man Records. Yet his success ultimately rests on the quality and authenticity of his own artistic voice.
With a voice that carries traces of both Van Morrison’s intimacy and Bruce Springsteen’s storytelling tradition, Vance moves effortlessly between folk, contemporary pop, soul and blues. His songs are vivid and grounded, often populated by people in motion—moving away from something, toward something else. His lyrics are marked by a quiet existential gaze, where everyday details open onto larger questions of faith, loss and belonging.
The forthcoming album The Wake marks a defining chapter in this journey. The record completes a 26-year process of grieving his father’s passing in 1999—a journey that has so far resulted in seven deeply affecting and introspective albums. As is often the case with Vance, the music shifts between folk, soul and blues, and his raw voice carries songs about fatherhood, loss, the passage of time and the resilience of the human spirit. The latest single, We Almost Made It, offers a clear glimpse of his rare ability to combine restraint with powerful emotional intensity.
