For over 30 years, the fans had to wait. But in 2021, Jakob Hellman made his comeback with his second album, Äntligen borta. The artist who disappeared became the artist who returned – and who is now here to stay. Last autumn, he released his third album, Slutet gott. But for the pop icon Hellman, it’s far from the end. This summer, he’s heading out on a summer tour with its final destination in Stockholm!
He came out of nowhere – and changed everything. By “nowhere,” we mean the small northern Swedish village of Vuollerim, and by “everything,” we mean the direction of Swedish-language pop music. Jakob Hellman made a sensational breakthrough in 1989 with the release of his debut album …och stora havet. Songs like “Vara vänner” and “Hon har ett sätt” introduced a new way of writing Swedish pop songs, with word-rich lyrics and an expression that combined naivety and melancholy.
With …och stora havet, Hellman not only rewrote the rules of Swedish pop but also secured his place in music history. Artists like Kent, Håkan Hellström, and Veronica Maggio are hard to imagine without the doors his debut album opened. The record is repeatedly ranked as one of the greatest in Swedish music history. But it also became his only one – and ever since, the myths surrounding Jakob Hellman and his disappearance have been many. Despite his short career, he remains one of Swedish pop’s most beloved and most missed artists.
Now a new chapter begins. The story of “the artist who disappeared” has turned into “the artist who came back.” Four and a half years after his return with Äntligen borta, Hellman released his third album, Slutet gott (Universal), on September 26. The album was followed by an extensive tour across Sweden with several sold-out dates. Now it is being followed up with a summer tour featuring ten carefully selected stops, with Mosebacketerassen in Stockholm set to bring the journey to a close.
