Late one night, somewhere in Europe, Sebastian Murphy of Viagra Boys sits in a tour bus next to the stand-in saxophonist Isak Hedtjärn. They’re listening to ballads by Albert Ayler, early punk bands, and wedding marches by Gössa Anders. Naturally, the conversation drifts to a shared favorite: Fred Åkerström’s interpretations of Bellman – Glimmande nymf, Stolta stad.
What at first seems like a non-existent common thread suddenly begins to shine through. The connection between jazz, punk, folk music and the baroque becomes impossible to ignore. The expression and the energy are the same: raw yet tender, steeped in misery and uncompromising spirit.
A few years later, Sebastian gets in touch, eager to do this music justice. And it has to happen together with Svenska Folkjazzkvartetten, where Isak—alongside saxophonist Jonas Liljeberg, drummer Anton Jonsson and bassist Vilhelm Bromander—usually blends traditional Swedish folk music with jazz.
Now they take the stage at Södra Teatern to present their interpretations of Bellman for the very first time.
